K-beauty essentials for sensitive skin

“Sensitive skin” has become this catch-all category for skin that’s easy riled up. You can be oily or dry and still react negatively to certain products, and so there’s no better solution to sensitivity than understanding your own skin and its triggers. Certain skincare ingredients that are generally irritating for sensitive skin, including fragrance, sulfates, and certain alcohols. Some people will have no problem with them, but those with sensitive skin can experience itching, clogged pores, and breakouts.

As a person with oily, acne-prone skin, it took me a while to accept that my skin was also sensitive. I constantly felt like my skin was being attacked by my pimples, so my reaction was always to counter-attack, not realizing that some of my breakouts were actually triggered by all the harsh treatments I used to put on my face. Adjusting my regimen to remove triggers (fragrance is my main thing) and bad habits (vigorous scrubbing, applying acne treatment all over my face) helped calm my flareups and gave my skin a chance to heal.

Ingredients for Sensitive Skin

Madecassoside

Madecassoside is an active ingredient in skin care, and to clear up any confusion, it is derived from the Centella Asiatica plant. When you see a product that has “centella” on the label, it contains madecassoside as an active ingredient. Madecassic acid, asiaticoside, and asiatic acid are also components of of the centella plant.

While Centella Asiatica has been used on skin for hundreds of years for its healing and antioxidant properties. Its medicinal value is attributed to triterpenes, which are the components listed above. It accelerates wound healing, enhances collagen synthesis, and promotes antioxidant activity as well as heals inflammation.

Both centella and madecassoside offer benefits for acne-prone skin that also happens to be sensitive, because they help inflammation and wounds heal faster and are also particularly gentle on the skin.

Beta-hydroxy Acids

Exfoliation for sensitive, acne-prone skin is tricky, because you don’t want to use physical scrubs that can exacerbate pimples, and you also want to be careful with acids that might be too drying. Beta-hydroxy acids are, in general, more appropriate for sensitive skin, and are commonly used to heal acne and sun damage because it can penetrate deep within the pores. An example of BHAs is salicylic acid, which targets acne but also calms redness and inflammation. Salicylic acid also controls oil production and refines skin texture by lifting dead skin cells and unclogging pores.
