The Keanaissance is real: Lana Wachowski, Warner Bros. confirm ‘Matrix 4’

Mr. Anderson, welcome back.

Just in time for the 20th anniversary of the first film in the iconic science fiction franchise, original creator Lana Wachowski and entertainment giant Warner Bros. Pictures have confirmed what long-time fans and nerds have long been speculating on: we’re going back to the Matrix.

According to a report published by entertainment website Variety, a fourth Matrix movie is now in development, with original creator Lana Wachowski on writing and directorial duties, and original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss set to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana,” Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich said in a statement. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe” Emmerich added.

“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now. I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends,” Wachowski, who first created the series with her sister Lilly in 1999, added.

Helping Wachowski with the script are Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell, while Grant Hill will be assisting the Sense8 creator as a producer.

While Warner Bros. has been trying for the last couple of years to find a way to get back into The Matrix universe, a hold-up over producing rights has kept slowing the project down. Over the past couple of months however, the studio saw an opportunity to ramp up development, boosted by the recent resurgence of actor Keanu Reeves in the public eye, following his recent outings in the box office hits John Wick 3 and Toy Story 4 — a resurgence that fans have come to dub as the “Keanaissance.”

According to online reports, the fourth film in the $1.6 billion franchise is eyed to begin production in early 2020, although no release date has been mentioned as of press time.
