Kevin Smith announces new ‘He-Man’ series for Netflix

By the power of Grayskull, "He-Man" is coming back.

Sharpen your swords, polish your shields, and strap on your armor, because kids, we’re heading back to Eternia.

Director Kevin Smith, best known for his View Askewniverse cinematic franchise, surprised audiences at the annual Power-Con convention in Anaheim, California by announcing a new animated “He-Man” series for Netflix.

Unlike Netflix’s currently-running She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which is a reboot of the 1980’s Masters of the Universe spinoff featuring He-Man’s sister, the new series, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, will take place in the Mattel toy inspired world and will focus on some of the unresolved storylines of the classic ‘80s show.

“I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe,” Smith, who will be functioning as the upcoming series’ showrunner and executive producer, said in a press release.

“In Revelation, we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! Brought to life with the most metal character designs Powerhouse Animation can contain in the frame, this is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!” Smith said.

According to reports, Mattel Television will be producing the upcoming series alongside executive producer Rob David, current vice president of Mattel TV and author of the 2014 comic series He-Man: The Eternity War.

Among the writers to be tapped for the series are Supergirl’s Eric Carrasco, Reign of the Supermen‘s Tim Sheridan, Magic the Gathering‘s Diya Mishra, and Alphas’ Marc Bernardin. Powerhouse Animation, which produced the acclaimed Castlevania animated series for Netflix, on the other hand, will oversee animation for the upcoming series.

This project appears to be different from the Masters of the Universe film helmed by the Nee brothers that is set to be released in theaters in 2021, which will reportedly star Noah Centineo as Prince Adam.

No release date has been set for Masters of the Universe: Revelation, as of press time.
