Why ‘Dead to Me’ should be next on your binge list

Burnt out and depressed middle aged women are often the lead characters in tragicomedies — and why shouldn’t they be? The things we do when we’ve crossed that fine line between anxious to apeshit is hysterical. In Netflix’s new Original Series, Dead to Me, Jen (Christina Applegate) and Judy (Linda Cardellini) play unlikely BFFs who meet at a grief counseling group. Jen is a hothead widow whose husband was killed in a hit-and-run and Judy is an eccentric with a secret, well, several actually. And that’s what makes the friendship so tasty.

The dark comedy tackles how everyone has their own version of grief, and how sometimes this version can be sick and twisted. If Applegate and Cardellini weren’t so funny, the series, admittedly, would be difficult to binge-watch. But given Cardellini’s quirkiness (and cute outfits) and Applegate’s endearing brand of rage, Dead to Me is the ideal accompaniment to a glass of wine after a long day. It’s therapeutic, in fact. To paraphrase a famous quote, comedy is tragedy that happens to other people. We’re happy to watch Jen and Judy go through their struggles knowing that it could be us, but ain’t us.

Dead to Me is now streaming on Netflix.
