Four makeup trends we’re saying goodbye to this fall

MAC Cosmetics recently unveiled its fall/winter 2017 trends, featuring runway looks and new drool-worthy products. The coming season’s looks, hinged on the fact that it coincides the holidays (i.e. party season), are all about exploring power through makeup. MAC divided the looks into four categories: Big, Bold, Rouged and Washed — all expressions of different types of powerful women. The common thread among all of them is the “sense of singularity” and deliberateness. “Pared back” back does not mean effortless.” The looks are specific and consciously calibrated, and they are statements against the “one-face-fits-all beauty created by mass media,” says Terry Barber. Power, in terms of makeup, is being blatantly courageous in trying new things. That’s the look for fall, as you’ll see below.

BOLD: Goodbye shy-shadows, hello brave color

BOLD is about saturated chromatic color. “It feels modern to explore it now as a very elegant detail that is dressed around in very customized ways,” says Lyne Desnoyers. This means wearing a flash of opaque color against fresh, translucent skin, and rather little less. “The stronger the statement, the simpler the rest of the face has to be,” confirms Terry Barber.

SHARP IS ONE WAY TO WEAR IT: A SLASHED LINE OR A CRISP SHAPE ADORNING THE EYE WITH A DECORATIVE, AERODYNAMIC DETAIL. “THERE IS A DELIBERATE BLUNTNESS
TO THESE LINES THAT MAKES THEM INCREDIBLY COOL — IT’S THE OPPOSITE OF A TRADITIONAL FELINE CAT EYE,” SAYS BARBER.

WASHED: Goodbye slick skin, hello creamy radiance

MAC is calling it “enriched beauty.” That’s like no-makeup-makeup but exaggerated — and so obviously with makeup. Trust MAC when it says that’s not counterintuitive. “We’re using matteness and shine to give elevation to the features rather than a lot of makeup, so that it doesn’t look overly cosmetic,” Mark Carrasquillo explains. “We’ve also moved on from power-wet skin into a skincare-like radiance.” Think fresh-faced girls trekking through the Himalayas, or in general, a nomadic, traveler woman. That can be you. Hannah Murray adds, “Color should appear as if they are coming from behind the skin rather than on top. It’s a fresh, polished effect, finished so that you’re not entirely sure if it is, or isn’t, makeup that has created it.”

“WE’VE MOVED ON FROM THE POWER-WET SKIN INTO A SKINCARE-LIKE RADIANCE.”
“IT’S A FRESH AND POLISHED EFFECT, FINISHED SO THAT YOU’RE NOT ENTIRELY SURE IF IT IS, OR ISN’T, MAKEUP THAT HAS CREATED IT,” SHE SAYS.

ROUGED: Goodbye perfect red lip, hello snogged pout

This season, red is blurred see-through, and soft, but still definitely demanding of everybody’s attention. Its typical placement on the lips evolves into something more expressionist. “This season’s red mouth is a smudgy blueprint, a snogged stain,” says Val Garland. “It’s about using eyeshadow blending brushes to blur the edges rather than lip brushes that draw the perfect shape. It’s should feel sexy, but irreverent.” Rouge — from scarlet to candy floss — is also used to tint skin, and is applied with utmost translucency.

“APPLYING RED TO THE FACE IS THE MOST ANCIENT OF BEAUTY GESTURES BUT RIGHT NOW IT FEELS REALLY NEW. THE WAY WE ARE USING IT THIS SEASON REFLECTS A NEED OF MAKEUP ARTISTS TO BREAK APART THE CLASSICS, REDUCING THEM TO SIMPLE EXPRESSIONS OR REINTERPRET THEM WITH COLOUR.”
“THIS SEASON’S RED MOUTH IS A SMUDGY BLUEPRINT, A SNOGGED STAIN,” SAYS VAL GARLAND.

BIG: Goodbye cat-eye, hello bolt line

This season, the eye takes on an “organized” and precise shape, but twisted with unexpected color. “The texture should be destroyed,” says Barber. Liner is exaggerated and displaced, the cat-eye is replaced with the “bolt line,” which is more graphic — anywhere but the classic flick. The lashes take on brave new statements, amplified more than pretty, and definitely modern.

SHADOW REDUX SEES THE COMEBACK OF INTENSE POWDER EYE SHADOWS, THE PUSHED LINE ALLOWS EYE LINER TO LOOK FRESH, AND THERE’S A BRAVE NEW LOOK AT THE GRAPHIC LASH AS AN ART FORM IN ITSELF.
“IT’S TAKING SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS A SMOKY EYE BUT TWISTING IT WITH UNEXPECTED COLOUR. AND WHILE THE SHAPE SHOULD BE ORGANIZED, THE TEXTURE SHOULD BE DESTROYED.”
