10 songs we want to hear in the Devil Wears Prada musical

The success of La La Land, however much-protested, brought to the audience an otherwise niche medium of storytelling. Hopefully, this recent illumination that “bursting into song” isn’t all that bad will redirect both new and old fans to its original platform, and lead to musicals that have both mass appeal and artistic value.

Enter The Devil Wears Prada, which is now poised to be shown on a third platform, Broadway. The film adaptation of the original novel by Lauren Weisberger is a pop culture icon in itself starred Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and the effervescent Stanley Tucci — all with theater credits under their belts. Here’s hoping they would actually star in the musical as well, although that would be kind of a stretch. For those who will be cast: You have big shoes to fill.

What’s not a stretch: for a musician of gleaming caliber to write the music for the play. In fact, it’s happening. Elton John, who wrote the music for the stage adaptations of The Lion King and Billy Elliot, will be writing for The Devil Wears Prada, with playwright Paul Rudnick. While not much else has been reported, we’re so excited that we made a list of songs Sir Elton might want to write. In our humble opinion.

  1. A Million Girls Would Kill For This – Andy Sachs lands a job as Miranda Priestly’s assistant.
  2. This Stuff – In which Andy gets schooled on the origins of her cerulean blue sweater.
  3. Can You Spell ‘Gabbana’? – Wouldn’t it be fun if the musical gave us a rundown of all the fashion names we cannot spell or pronounce?
  4. Florals for Spring/Welcome to the Jungle – For the montage of seemingly ridiculous scenarios Andy will find herself in as she settles into her glamorous new job.
  5. Chanel Boots – Andy walks in with a new look. I always imagine this scene unfolding to Heart’s Barracuda, although that wouldn’t be very The Devil Wears Prada, would it?
  6. Gold Star – Remember this scene? “Andy, be serious. You are not trying. You are whining,” said Nigel. If it were to sound a bit like Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me, that would be great.
  7. The Prisoner of Runway – In which Miranda’s demands for the unpublished Harry Potter books for the twins.
  8. Ringtone – Sir Elton John, please write a song that samples that ringtone. It’s been ringing in our ears forever.
  9. Andy, Baby – Andy’s naiveté is revealed when she discovers that people are not what they seem.
  10. You Have Big Shoes to Fill – Andy leaves Miranda and tries to make it on her own.
